The 11th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE BUILDING CULTURAL BRIDGES (ICBCB)
SDU University is pleased to announce the 11th ICBCB conference, organised in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Education, Languages, and Internationalisation Network (ELINET). The conference is scheduled for 10-11 October 2024 in Qaskelen, Kazakhstan. This collaborative effort aims to bring together experts and researchers from various fields to share high-quality research on the given topic and provide the opportunity for a research network.
The conference is open to postgraduate research students as well as to academicians, researchers, managers and practitioners to share their research findings with experts whose research connects with Education in its broadest sense. We welcome presenters and attendees from other departments at SDU University and from other higher education institutions in Kazakhstan and beyond. The conference offers a dynamic and friendly environment for postgraduate researchers to showcase and discuss their research, even if the research is still in early stages. You do not need to have completed data collection in order to submit an abstract, as you can present e.g. a literature review-based or a theoretical paper. We invite potential presenters to consider how their research relates to changes in our world; be it about current or historic, local, or global issues. Attendees will be able to listen to colleagues from different areas of the Education Studies field; those presenting will be able to receive feedback in a diverse, constructive, and academically rigorous environment.
This year the conference will include a keynote programme of two panel sessions. Presenters are encouraged to submit abstracts irrespective of their relevance to this theme. We are happy to accept submissions that are related to any of the sub-themes listed below. This year we are accepting live presentations and article submissions. Please, note that both oral and article submissions will require an abstract to be uploaded first. Further information can be found on the conference webpages.

TRACKS
The Faculty of Education and Humanities of SDU University in Qaskelen (Kazakhstan) is pleased to host the 9th International Conference Building Cultural Bridges (ICBCB) which will take place on September 24-25, 2020 in Qaskelen. The ICBCB Conference aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators with interests in education at all levels from around the world. The theme of the ICBCB 2020 conference, “Global Trends and Values in Education” is designed to attract the research communities to promote connections between theory and practice and explore different perspectives on the application of research findings into practice.
The overarching theme of this annual conference reflects important trends and issues on values in education, and invites papers that investigate the various areas of education in the following streams:
Global Issues in Language Education: Inclusivity, Digitalisation, and Edutainment
In the current educational milieu, there is widespread recognition of the evolving mandates for educational institutions, particularly emphasising the cultivation of individuals with proficient foreign language skills to navigate diverse environments and excel in their domains. This underscores the importance of foreign language education tailored to reflect both national attributes and universal values alongside innovative trajectories in linguistic development that actively promote inclusive access to education. Despite prevalent beliefs favouring segregation for accommodating learners’ diverse needs, such notions diverge from foundational principles of international human rights and development objectives. Instead, there is a resounding endorsement of an inclusive educational paradigm, ensuring equitable access for all learners. This inclusive ethos not only fosters diversity and inclusivity but also underscores a steadfast commitment to realising every learner’s full potential, aligning with broader global aspirations for collective educational progress. To advance in foreign language and inclusive education, it is essential to acknowledge the role of integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education, which facilitates the acquisition of learning materials through contemporary technology, including alternative avenues beyond conventional devices like computers and smartphones.
The conference speakers are expected to deliver talks on various aspects of Language Education, Inclusive Education, and ICT in Education, such as ways of successful integration of ICT in learning, solving ICT-enhanced learning drawbacks, addressing the Digital Divide [the gap between people with and without the access to technology]. Other related topics can be accepted by reviewer’s approval if only confirmed to be relevant.
The offered works will be evaluated according to their relevance and technical design.
Following the aim as above, this direction of the conference provides for the following issues:
- Current trends in Foreign Language Education: Theory and Practice
- Multilingual Education and Its Implementation;
- Inclusivity in Foreign Language Education
- Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Issues in Foreign Language Education;
- Digitalisation and a Role of Artificial Intelligence in Foreign Language Education;
- Intercultural approach in Foreign Language Education and Beyond: Concepts, Perspectives and Practices.
Innovative Approaches to STEM Education: Bridging Disciplines for Creative Learning
STEM education is one of the major trends in education that promotes students’ creative learning through utilising 21-century skills. Although STEM explores the same concepts as in STEM education, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths, it integrates these concepts with the Arts discipline developing students’ creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills through inquiry and problem-based learning.
This track of the ICBCB 2024 conference aims to bring together leading scholars, educators and practitioners with interests in any dimensions of STEM education. The conference will serve as a venue for sharing our experiences and acquiring a deeper knowledge about STEM-related studies, projects and innovations from the collaborative work of local and international experts.
The submissions will be accepted based on their originality, quality, significance, technical merit and relevance to ICBCB 2024.
- The scope of STEM track covers (but not limited to);
- Learning and Teaching Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology);
- Technology-assisted learning in Natural Science;
- Engineering at school and beyond;
- CLIL Issues in Teaching and Learning Science;
New Trends in Linguistics and Translation Studies
Translation Studies is one of the major contemporary research trends that deals with the theory, description, and application of translation. Because it examines translation not only as interlingual transfer but also as intercultural communication, it can also be described as an interdisciplinary field which intersects with other diverse fields of knowledge, including comparative literature, cultural studies, gender studies, computer science, history, linguistics, philosophy, rhetoric, and semiotics. Translation Studies is often paired with Interpreting, although the two are distinct fields.
ICBCB 2024 is the premier forum for the presentation of research results in the fields of linguistics and translation studies. “New Trends in Linguistics and Translation Studies” conference track is soliciting research papers in the following areas of interest:
- Language, Translation and Cultural Sustainability
- Teaching Translation
- Machine vs Human translation
- Corpus-based Approach in Linguistics and Translation Studies
- Text Analysis: Understanding, Summarising, and Generating Insights
- Language policy and planning
- Multilingualism and Language Contacts
- Text linguistics
Current Issues in Language, Literature, and History within the Context of Globalization
The 21st century marks an era of global exploration, wherein cultures intersect and new avenues emerge in the realms of science and education. Today, scholars advocate for a focus on emerging trends in language, literature, and history, urging a shift towards a global perspective. While traditional approaches to science and methodology often treated language and literature as distinct entities, there is now a preference for interdisciplinary, integrated research.
This track encompasses research interests that include:
- Current issues in teaching and learning the Kazakh language
- Emerging trends in linguistics
- Novel genres in Kazakh literature
- Kazakh Literary History: Theory and Critical Perspectives
- Digital literacy in language and literature teaching
- Contemporary issues in research and pedagogy of Central Asian history
Advancing Holistic Education: Strategies for Sustainable Development and Effective Leadership
The holistic approach to the educational process provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge, research and best practices in the field of education. In this section, specialists, scientists, teachers, and practice educators come together to discuss how a holistic approach contributes to the formation of personality as a whole: intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects in the educational process at all levels – from pre-school to higher education.
The main purpose of the section is to identify and analyse methods and strategies for solving problems of sustainable development in education. Participants discuss how to ensure a smooth transition from one educational level to another, while maintaining the relevance and quality of education. Additionally, ensuring effective leadership in education has become a crucial policy focus for fostering excellence in learning, teaching, and institutional development. In light of the swiftly evolving global landscape, there is a pressing need to reassess the functions of educational leaders and devise strategies to inspire staff and enhance student outcomes.
It also proposes that educational experience promotes a more balanced development of – and cultivates the relationship among – the different aspects of the individual, as well as the relationships between the individual and other people, the individual, and the natural environment, the inner-self of students and the external world.
Holistic education will bring together researchers and will provide discussions on topics such as:
- Pre-school Education: Addressing Sustainability Challenges
- Values-Based Education: Best Practices in Primary, Secondary, and High Schools
- Innovative Teaching and Pedagogical Approaches in Primary, Secondary, and High Schools
- Cultivating 21st Century Leaders in a Global Context: Integrating Core Principles, Successful Approaches, and Cultural Perspectives
- Theories, Practices, and Solutions of Inclusive Education
- Adult and Lifelong Learning
English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Dynamics in Higher Education
Due to the rapid advancements in the social, political, and economic worldwide arena, the internationalisation of higher education has become a focus of many countries. Being one of the key factors for successful integration into the European Higher Education Area, internationalisation has resulted in the global advancement of EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) in non-English speaking countries at all levels of education. The implementation of EMI is seen as a means to facilitate global communication, strengthen international relations, and expand access to knowledge, especially in higher education. This conference track delves into the dynamics of EMI in higher education and aims to address the following themes:
- Translanguaging versus English language dominance
- Equipping and training teachers for EMI – establishing best practices
- Assessment in EMI – the content/language balance
- The EMI spectrum – defining immersion, CLIL and target-language delivery
- Policy and practice –the realities of EMI in Secondary School
- Enhancing collaboration: the role of content teachers and language teachers
- Challenges and Opportunities of EMI in Higher Education
