Overview

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at Suleyman Demirel University will host an international conference on Law and Social Sciences on 16-17 April, 2021. The conference seeks to provide a common venue for academics, professionals, researchers, PhD candidates, master students in the field of law and social sciences from around the world. The theme of the conference – “Law and Social Sciences during the COVID-19 Pandemic” – is elaborated in order to facilitate the discussion on how the COVID-19 affected the fields of law, international relations, journalism, public administration, history and human rights. The major aim of this conference is to outline the extent of the COVID-19’s impact, offer new approaches in dealing with the challenges of the current pandemic, facilitate the exchange of ideas and research experiences, and present new collaborative and networking opportunities.

The Faculty of Law and Social Sciences is glad to welcome scholars from the international and local universities, research institutes and any other relevant institutions to participate in this conference. This event will bring together distinguished speakers and scholars to give keynote speeches and conduct panel discussions.

INVITED SPEAKERS

ULI SCHAMILOGLU

Uli Schamiloglu is Professor and chair in the Department of Kazakh Language and Turkic Studies at Nazarbayev University in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, which he joined as a visiting professor in 2016. He has taught previously at Indiana University-Bloomington (1983-1989) and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1989-2017), where he is now professor emeritus.

Uli Schamiloglu received his B.A. in Middle East Languages and Cultures from Columbia College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in Middle Eastern and Central Asian History from Columbia University in 1986. He also studied at Szeged University in Hungary in Fall 1982.

His doctoral dissertation was on “Tribal Politics and Social Organization in the Golden Horde”. His main research interests include the Turkic languages and cultures of the Middle East and Central Eurasia, the socio-economic history of the Middle East and Central Eurasia in the medieval period, the history of Turko-Islamic civilization, and modern intellectual movements among the Muslim Turkic peoples of the Ottoman and Russian Empires.

Since the late 1980s Professor Schamiloglu has been interested in the role of the Black Death in the history of medieval Central Eurasia, especially its role in the history of the Golden Horde and the other states of the Mongol World Empire, including the impact of plague on the history of populations, literary languages, religiosity, and written monuments. More recently he has also begun to work on the Plague in the Time of Justinian in Central Eurasian history as well and hopes to work on modern plague in the future too.

Professor Schamiloglu is also director of the Ph.D. in Eurasian Studies program at Nazarbayev University.

BEATE JOSEPHI

Dr. Beate Josephi is an Honorary Associate in the Department of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. Her publications include an edited volume on Journalism Education in Countries with Limited Media Freedom (2010), and a guest-edited issue of Journalism on ‘Decoupling Journalism and Democracy’ (2013). As part of the Worlds of Journalism team, she is lead author of the chapter ‘Profiles of Journalists’ in Worlds of Journalism (2019, ed. Hanitzsch et al.) and will be co-investigator for Uzbekistan with Berdak Bayimbetov who is the Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences at SDU. She is author of chapters and entries in international handbooks on journalism, and many internationally published articles. A former chair of IAMCR’s (International Association for Media and Communication Research) journalism research and education section, her research interests center on journalism and its importance in varying situations of state control, journalism education, and literary journalism.

PENNY O’DONNELL

Dr. Penny O’Donnell is Senior Lecturer in International Media and Journalism in the Department of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. Her research interests include job loss and precarity in journalism, automation and the future of public interest news, and journalism education and Southern theory. She is a co-chief investigator on the Australian Research Council-funded New Beats research project (2014-2020), collaborating locally with the journalists’ union (industry partner) and internationally with journalism scholars Nicole Cohen and Andrea Hunter (Canada) and Henrik Örnebring (Sweden). Two forthcoming book publications exemplify the innovative journalism research created through the New Beats Project: Journalists and Job Loss (forthcoming London: Routledge 2021) and Upheaval: Journalists’ lives before and during digital disruption (forthcoming 2021).

ABEL POLESE

Dr. Abel Polese is a researcher, trainer, writer, manager and fundraiser. He has worked on questions of development, (informal) governance, identity, shadow economy, corruption and reciprocity. He is also interested in management and strategic thinking of academic career. He is the author of “The SCOPUS Diaries and the (Il)logics of Academic Survival: A Short Guide to Design Your Own Strategy and Survive Bibliometrics, Conferences, and Unreal Expectations in Academia”, a reflection on academic life, research life, mental health, life-work balance and the choices and obstacles young scholars face at the beginning of their career.

C. RAJ KUMAR

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, a Rhodes Scholar, is the Founding Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) in India. He is an accomplished legal scholar and works in the fields of human rights and development, comparative constitutional law, terrorism and national security, corruption and governance, law and disaster management, legal education and higher education. He has seven books and over hundred and fifty publications to his credit and has published widely in peer reviewed journals, law reviews and other internationally reputed publishing houses based in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore, UK and the USA. 

 

Professor Kumar was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford, UK, where he obtained his Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) degree; a Landon Gammon Fellowship at the Harvard Law School, USA, where he obtained his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree and a James Souverine Gallo Memorial Scholarship at Harvard University. He received the Doctor of Legal Science (S.J.D.) from the University of Hong Kong. He also obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from the University of Delhi, India; and a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree from the Loyola College, University of Madras, India. 

 

Professor Kumar has held consultancy assignments in the field of human rights and governance. He has been a Consultant to the United Nations University (UNU), Tokyo; United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, Geneva; and the International Council for Human Rights Policy (ICHRP), Geneva. He has advised the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in Sri Lanka and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in India on issues relating to corruption and good governance. Professor Kumar is an Attorney at Law and is admitted to the Bar Council of Delhi, India and the Bar of the State of New York, USA.

S. M. FERDOUS AZAM

Dr. S. M. Ferdous Azam is currently working in Management and Science University (MSU) in Malaysia. His research and supervisory interests include finance, economics, marketing, businesses and management, small and medium enterprises, e-commerce, education etc. Furthermore, he has more than 100 publications in diversified international journals, together with numerous conference proceedings and book chapters.

SAUD ASIF

Originally from Bareilly, India, Saud Asif is an Indian Lawyer. He holds an LLB (2016 Batch) from Invertis University (India) and a PG Diploma in Cyber Law from Nalsar University (India). He is interested in Cyber law, Data Law and Intellectual Property law.  Currently he is an associate at Syed Afzal Ali Chamber, Uttar Pradesh, India. His role is to appear, argue and litigate in the Civil, company, Criminal, consumer, Cyber Crimes, and Trademark matters.

Mr. Asif has previously been practicing at Delhi High court.  He was an associate/attorney at Mace Corporate Associates in New Delhi, where he focused on filing and litigation of the trademark and copyrights and other legal work under the framing of litigation and drafting. In the year 2018, during his course of practice he also became a part of the International Intellectual Property workshop which was organised at WIPO Headquarter in Geneva, Switzerland.

Prior to entering the legal field, during his graduation Mr. Asif has done numerous internships. In November 2015, Saud Asif did an internship at Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) in New Delhi where he carried out field work to collect data on child marriage in India. In October-November 2014, Mr. Asif stayed in the Indian village of Rajasthan state to do research on social issues such as untouchability and poverty in India.

Authors can choose to submit either a full article (3500-4000 words) or an extended abstract (1500 words). All articles and extended abstracts will be reviewed by a peer review committee and included in the conference proceeding. Academic Honesty

Articles submitted to the conference should report original and previously unpublished findings. Any act of plagiarism cannot be tolerated. If an author is found to commit an act of plagiarism, the submission will be automatically dismissed.

Support the faculty (professors)

1. Support Research Internship Program. Faculty members develop academic curriculum and research at the University. Within the framework of this program SDU provides faculty members with the opportunities to do research abroad. Your donations will cover flight expenses, accommodation and monthly salary from 6 months up to 1 year. SDU also invites professors from abroad to share their knowledge and experience with local faculty and students.
2. Support “Zhas maman” Program. “Zhas maman” program is aimed at developing university human capital by selecting the best SDU graduates and helping them start their academic career as teaching assistants. Young specialists are encouraged to do PhD abroad and get rich research experience from prestigious universities. Teaching assistants are provided with scholarships and professional advise from the faculty.

SDU campus is a central place for students educational and recreational activities. University aims to renew its basic infrastructure by building new facilities and substantially renovating existing ones. This includes buildings, roads, utilities, grounds and landscaping, student housing, and information technology resources needed to fully support the University mission. Maintaining up-to-date library resources and research facilities, equipment, and technological tools are also important.

This program is for outstanding students regardless of their welfare. Eligible students have to demonstrate outstanding academic and social achievements. Infomatrix Asia is an independent competition. Therefore, you are free to submit your project to any other competitions.

The participation fee is a required fixed cost that covers: transportation, medals, t-shirts, certificates, food, lodging and so on…

We are inviting participants to stay in our comfortable and modern “Student House” located on the territory of SDU.

The student house of Suleyman Demirel University offers students not only accommodation and meals on the territory of the Smart Campus during their studies, but also the opportunity to improve their social skills and strengthen international relationships.
