The Future of Kazakh Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
On February 14, 2025, SDU University hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence and the Transformation of Kazakh Media,” organized by the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, the School of Journalism, and the “Club of Chief Editors.”
Leading media representatives from Kazakhstan participated in the forum, discussing the impact of artificial intelligence on the Kazakh media landscape, new journalism formats, and information security issues.
During the meeting, Senator Bibigul Nurgalikyzy Zhexsenbai, President of the “Club of Chief Editors,” highlighted the opportunities that artificial intelligence brings to Kazakh journalism. She also emphasized the importance of information security and the role of modern media.
“Artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of modern journalism. The proper use of this technology will give a new impetus to the development of professional journalism,” said Yerzhan Kalymbaiuly, General Director of the “Alatay Aqparat” media holding.
The forum discussed the influence of artificial intelligence on the Kazakh media landscape and its new opportunities in journalism. Trends in digital media and information security issues were also addressed. Speakers talked about the transformations AI has brought to journalism, automation in content production, and the future of media formats.
AI as a Tool for Students
Journalism students created a video using artificial intelligence, demonstrating how a single image can convey information in multiple languages. In the future, a specialized course on artificial intelligence is planned to be introduced into the Journalism school’s curriculum.
Additionally, an open discussion took place between SDU students and media professionals, where young journalists asked questions of interest. Topics such as information manipulation, fact-checking, ethics, and AI’s role in media were discussed, with experts sharing their experiences and insights.
Conclusion: A New Era for Kazakh Media
At the conclusion of the forum, participants emphasized the significant impact of artificial intelligence on the development of Kazakh media but also highlighted the need for its responsible and effective use. The event demonstrated the importance of dialogue between media professionals and young journalists and showed that such discussions contribute to industry development.
The forum, organized by SDU University, provided students with the opportunity to learn from experienced journalists, explore new media technologies, and determine their future career paths.
