The theme of the ICBCB 2020 conference, “Global Trends and Values in Education” is designed to attract the research communities to promote connections between theory and practice and explore different perspectives on the application of research findings into practice.
The overarching theme of this annual conference reflects important trends and issues on values in education, and invites papers that investigate the various areas of education in the following streams:
TRACKS
Joint Track I Digital Tools for Inclusive Education
This track examines the role of digital technologies in promoting equity and accessibility in educational settings. It invites contributions that investigate how digital tools, platforms, and pedagogical innovations can support learners with diverse needs, reduce barriers to participation, and foster more inclusive learning environments. Submissions may include empirical research, conceptual analyses, or practical case studies demonstrating how technology-enhanced approaches contribute to inclusive education.
ELIPro Track II The History of Kazakh Language within Multilingual Education in Kazakhstan
This track focuses on the historical development of the Kazakh language and its evolving role within Kazakhstan’s multilingual education landscape. It invites research examining language policies, sociolinguistic dynamics, and educational reforms that have shaped the status, functions, and pedagogical positioning of the Kazakh language across different periods. Contributions may explore historical trajectories, policy shifts, curriculum changes, and the interaction of Kazakh with Russian and other languages in education. Submissions may include empirical studies, historical analyses, or conceptual discussions that deepen our understanding of Kazakh language development in a multilingual context.
ELIPro Track III Multilingual Identity
Focusing on educational settings, this track investigates how multilingual learners develop and negotiate their identities within classrooms and institutions. Topics may include language choice, learner agency, heritage language maintenance, teacher perceptions, and the role of schooling in identity development. Both empirical and conceptual contributions are encouraged.
ELIPro Track IV Education Policy Challenges Multilingualism/Language Hierarchies
Research in this area explores how education policies construct, negotiate, or disrupt language hierarchies in multilingual societies. Key issues include the status and functions of national, regional, and global languages; language-of-instruction reforms; and the implications of policy decisions for equity, access, and academic achievement. Studies may focus on how linguistic hierarchies emerge through curriculum, assessment, teacher training, or institutional practices, as well as how policy interventions can promote more inclusive and balanced multilingual education systems. Submissions drawing on comparative policy analysis, sociolinguistics, or case-based evidence are welcomed.
ICBCB Track V Current Developments in Language, Literature, and History in a Globalized World
Contemporary scholarship highlights significant transformations in linguistic practices, literary expression, and historical interpretation driven by global interconnectedness. This area welcomes analyses of language change, cross-cultural literary trends, and the recontextualization of historical narratives in transnational and digital environments. Studies may explore how global mobility, technological advances, and intercultural encounters shape identity, cultural production, and collective memory. Diverse methodological and theoretical approaches that shed light on these ongoing developments are encouraged.
ICBCB Track VI New Trends in Applied Linguistics
Emerging research in applied linguistics is shaping innovative approaches to language learning, teaching, assessment, and policy. This area highlights current theoretical, methodological, and technological developments, including language acquisition, multilingualism, corpus-based studies, language for specific purposes, and the integration of digital tools in language education. SPEAKERS
PRAMOD K. SAH
Pramod K. Sah is a postdoctoral researcher currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary. He completed his PhD in Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia, where he was a Sessional Lecturer and a recipient of the Killam Doctoral Scholarship as a Killam Laureate. After finishing his doctoral studies, he worked briefly as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Open University in the United Kingdom. He also held a short postdoctoral position as a research associate with the British Council London prior to his current appointment. Before entering academia, he taught English and other subjects in elementary and secondary schools in Nepal for approximately five years, gaining extensive experience across K-12 educational settings. His research centres on language policy, ideology, multilingual and translingual practices, epistemic injustice, and ethnic and racialised discourses within English‑Medium Instruction in both K-12 and higher education. Among his current projects is a study funded by the British Council through the British Council London, which explores the intersection of gender and English-medium education in low- and middle-income countries, with empirical attention to Nepal and Nigeria. Another strand of his work examines how newcomer students in Canada construct, renegotiate, resist, and perform their intersectional identities—across language, race, ethnicity, culture, and religion—while learning English in Canadian school contexts. He is also invested in teacher education research, particularly the role of teacher agency and linguistic and cultural responsiveness in teacher preparation policies and training frameworks.
