On March 28th, the presentation of the book “Atomic Steppe: How Kazakhstan Gave Up the Bomb” (Stanford University Press, 2022) by Dr Togzhan Kassenova took place at our University, organized by the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences.
In her presentation, Dr Kassenova discussed the history of Soviet nuclear testing in the Kazakh steppe, the damage caused to the population and the environment, and the story of the public anti-nuclear movement that led to the closure of the Nuclear Testing site.
The Q&A session was informative, with thoughtful questions ranging from the strategic calculation of giving up atomic bombs, the current impact on the environment, and the current situation of the Semei Nuclear Testing site.
