Pedagogical retraining: Interview with Arman Argynbayev, the coordinator of TEFL program
What is pedagogical retraining and for whom has this program been developed?
The pedagogical retraining program is designed for people without a pedagogical education, but who want to teach in schools. We know that there is still a shortage of teachers in schools (this applies to regions where the situation with teachers is difficult – computer science is taught by IT specialists, physics engineers, etc.). Moreover, the profession of a teacher lately implies good career prospects. This program is an intellectual product that is the Kazakh equivalent of PGCE.
Who can enroll in this program? Are there any selection criteria?
People with a diploma of completion of higher education in a related profession can enroll in the program.
The advantage will be to have a certificate confirming proficiency in English, at least level A2. In the absence of a certificate, the applicant will have to pass an English proficiency test at SDU. It is worth paying special attention to the choice of direction (we have 7 of them). Let’s say an engineer will not be able to enter the program for the training of teachers of the Kazakh language or biology. During the program, students will not deepen into the basic theory, the emphasis will be on the subject itself and the methods of teaching it. For example: existing difficulties in teaching biology, the entire school curriculum in biology, interactive teaching methods, etc. That is, to enter the program, a person must already know the basics of biology.
How long does the training last? What is the format? Is there a possibility of participation for people from another city?
The duration of the program is 6 months.
The program will take place in a mixed format. Most of the program will be held online. Students will have to come to the university at the beginning of the program (November 1-14), and in the middle of the program (January 10-17) and also to pass the attestation on March 28-31. As you can see, the dates are set so that they coincide with school holidays.
What kind of certificate is provided in the end?
Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a state-issued certificate, which entitles them to work as a teacher at a school.
What are the prospects for a specialist who has completed these courses?
First of all, the program provides an opportunity for students to master the knowledge of pedagogy. During the course, students will be able to focus on the pedagogical components that will allow them to teach effectively in secondary education organizations.
In addition, the program gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in secondary educational institutions. At the end of the program, students will already have teaching experience and will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.
The biggest prospect that awaits the students is a change of professional activity. A certificate issued after the end of the program makes it possible to get a job as a teacher at a school. Thus, specialists in other fields who wanted to teach and did not have the opportunity to do it will be able to acquire the necessary skills for teaching.
