The first Hackathon hosted in Almaty by global vendor

The global leader in network technologies – Cisco – conducted the first Hackathon on 28-29 February at SDU Technopark. The event was hosted by SDU and Cisco Company.
99 IT students from eight universities of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan participated as 21 team in Cisco NetAcad Hackathon. Hackathon participants were introduced to the latest Cisco innovations, IoT concepts (Internet of Things), and most importantly, they made their attempts to fulfil their ideas with the help of the Company’s experts. Within Hackathon Cisco engineers provided interesting workshops on Cisco Devnet and IoT.
According to the Hackathon rules, students worked on their prototypes 24 hours in a row. Following a sleepless night 19 teams reached the final destination – presentation of their projects to the jury.
The first place on IoT track was taken by the team “TUK”, representing International Information Technology University, with their project “Integration of Smart Things”. As one of their prototypes, they integrated their system with Google Speech API, transforming audio flow into text. The solution may be used to provide subtitles during videoconferences, which can be helpful not only to people with disabilities, but also at noisy places, when it is hard to hear a speaker. The winners will pass an internship in XNET Company and will participate in Cisco SilkWay Forum.
Team “Akatsuki” from SDU took the first place in Software track. They attempted to automate the process of office parking. This solution allows to control gates, to let employees in and out, to indicate vacant parking lots and book them in telegram-bot with the help of cameras and computers, and license plates database. The winning team will pass an internship at WinnCom Technologies Company and will participate in Cisco SilkWay Forum as well.
– Student competitions are very important for the development of different types of skills among students, and not only technical, but also improve their skills of teamwork, proper presentation of their ideas, time management, etc. The first Cisco Hackathon in Kazakhstan created a perfect environment for students to dive into technical concepts on IoT, participate in the training for creative thinking “Cisco Design Thinking”, and to learn how to present their ideas during pitch training. We sincerely hope that this experience will help young generation both in study and career. By the way, the leading IT Companies of Kazakhstan are ready to invite some participants for internshipin their companies”, – highlighted Nargiz Omarbekova, Manager of Cisco Network Academies in Kazakhstan.
