Journalism is the activity of gathering, assessing, creating, and presenting news and information. It is also the product of these activities.

Journalism can be distinguished from other activities and products by certain identifiable characteristics and practices. These elements not only separate journalism from other forms of communication, they are what make it indispensable to democratic societies. 


Strenghts of education in SDU


  • Opportunity of learning foreign languages

All students enjoy the opportunities of developing/learning English and Turkish languages, along with (their) Kazakh and Russian languages. These languages are not taught in language classes only, but journalism classes are also offered in English, which means they learn composing the journalistic materials in English. This practice certainly give SDU students more opportunities in future while modern possibilities of global information distribution dictate professionals to be fit according to such demands.


  • Participation in student exchange programmes and practicing abroad

Students of Journalism, SDU, have opportunities to participate in Student Exchange Programmes based on SDU academic agreements with the academic institutions in foreign countries. Moreover, they develop their journalistic skills by practicing in local and international Press and TV channels. 


  • Instructors with international experiences

Majority of academic staff at SDU have international experiences, those have studied at well-known universities abroad and/or worked at various academic institutions in the foreign countries. They certainly offer their classes according to their gained practices in order to prepare competitive specialists.


  • Media Studio

SDU offers all possible conditions for student to do their creative works and develop their journalistic skills. SDU Media Studio, which was opened in 2011, is a great place for student who can learn there many practical aspects of journalism: speaking before the camera, editing video and audio materials, writing for newspaper, radio and TV programmes. SDU Media Studio is equipped with the latest relevant technologies.



  • Cooperation with "Almaty" TV channel

SDU Journalism school has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the "Almaty" TV channel. Starting from 2018-2019 academic year students of 3-4 courses will be trained in TV journalism on the basis of "Almaty" TV channel.




Media Design Lab

«Media Design Lab» was opened in purpose of teaching art and design issues in journalism. Moreover, students practice their blogging, SMM skills and online journalism courses in this lab.


Career and job prospects


Alumni  of Journalism specialization from SDU are expected to build their career in labour-market without any difficulties. They can work for various mass media in Kazakhstan and abroad, such as:
