The Faculty of Philology and Educational Sciences of Suleyman Demirel University in cooperation with the British Council in Kazakhstan, The Center for Multilingual Education, “Orleu” National Center for Professional Development and The Association for Applied Linguistics of Kazakhstan (AALK) on March 14-18, 2017 had 5 days Continuous Professional Development program “Teaching Content Through English: EMI and CLIL” .
Invited British Council trainer Ms.Yelena Moisseva covered the two popular approaches to teaching content through English: English as a medium of instruction (EMI) and Content and language integrated learning (CLIL). The training focused on ways teachers can provide language support to students, help them develop a positive attitude towards learning in English; motivate students to develop cognitive, communicative and general learning skills. The training included discussions of challenges in EMI and CLIL, practical tips on lesson planning, comparing Genre and Enquiry approaches to teaching, etc. On the final day of the training participants presented micro-teaching of a lesson episode and receive feedback from their peers and the trainer. By the end of last day, program coordinator Professor Azamat Akbarov awarded certificates of completion to participants signed by SDU, the British Council and “Orleu” National Center for Professional Development.
