On March 3, 2017 the Faculty of Philology and Education of SDU in cooperation with the Association for Applied Linguistics of Kazakhstan (AALK), the International Association for Translation and International Studies (IATIS), National Center for Professional Development “Orleu”, KazNU, KazUIR & WL, Translation Union “Dialogue” and Ghent University in Belgium organized 2nd IATIS Translator Training Workshop with local and international presenters which is first time ever in Kazakhstan.
The opening ceremony started with opening remark from the Dean of the Faculty Professor Akbarov where he welcomed all the guests and highlighted the importance of the seminar for the University and translation field in general. The opening ceremony was followed by the main program. The speakers, including Sonia Vandepitte (Ghent University, Belgium), Prof. Dr. Azamat Akbarov (AALK, SDU), Prof.Dr. Aybarsha Islam (KazUIR & WL), Asst.Prof.Dr. Kuralay Kenzhekhanova (KazNU), Mr. Auyel Yerzhan (TU Dialogue) and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Lejla Mirzoyeva (SDU), addressed topical issues and trends in the translation field related to quality of translation, employment market, and etc.
Professor Sonia Vandepitte is the head of English section of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Services at Ghent University. In her three lectures at SDU, Professor Vandepitte addressed the issues of translation quality, teaching issues of translation quality and students practicing translation quality procedures.
The event was attended by nearly 170 people from such institutions as KIMEP, Taraz State University, Kazakh Russian International University, KazNU, KazNRTU, Aktobe Regional State University, KAU, Turan college, SDC college, as well as freelancers and representatives of local businesses.
The aim of the seminar was to promote studies both in the interest of education and in the interest of quality of translation in the market, and to promote intercultural communication.
The seminar set an objective to create a platform to enable scholars from different professional backgrounds share experience and discuss translation and intercultural communication related issues. In addition, the event acted as a forum for junior translators to gain knowledge from their more experienced colleagues and get motivated.
As a token of appreciation, Dean of Faculty of Education, Professor. Azamat Akbarov, awarded a certificate of appreciation to all presenters. The next lecture in the spring speaker series at the Faculty will be held in April this year.
